Spicebush Swallowtail
Papilio troilus

Observation date: July 17, 2013
Submitted by: lunagirl
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The caterpillar was clinging to the siding of my house. I tried to remove it but it was stuck by the head and tail and I accidentally killed it! I wanted to raise it to the butterfly/moth stage but sadly I will now never get that change. Can you please identify this catepillar for me. Also, why was it so stuck to the wall that my removing it killed it? I don't know how it even got to where it was. It was on the wall of my front walk way with no plants closer than 10 feet or so. Thank you.

Coordinator notes: This caterpilar was in a pre-pupal stage getting ready to change into a chrysalis and was stuck to the wall by a silken bed it had created.
