Gulf Fritillary
Agraulis vanillae

Observation date: June 17, 2013

Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found these four caterpillars on a vine (that I also can't identify) in my Los Angeles garden. They are mostly black, with several narrow orange stripes running the length of their bodies. They have spikes with hairs growing on them. They were from .5 to 1.5 inches long. I removed them because they were killing the vine, and ended up relocating them to the neighbor's yard.
