Promethea silkmoth
Callosamia promethea

Observation date: May 30, 2013
Date notes: Two were holding on to the house wall beneath the outdoor light at 11:53PM
Submitted by: ildikoVT
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: There were two moths, both holding on to the siding of the house beneath an outdoor light. It was around midnight. One kept falling down to the ground, but I was able to pick it up and put it back on the woodpile that was covered with a blue tarp. Thus the photo of before and after.
Status: Resident

Verified date: June 03, 2013
Coordinator notes: Both are females of the similar promethea moth (Callosamia promethea). Your two individuals represent slightly different color forms of this species, but your location (as well as the two moths' coloration) lead me to ID them as promethea, the tulip tree silkmoth would be found further south.
