Field Crescent
Phyciodes pulchella

Observation date: April 26, 2013
Submitted by: Jared Hubbell
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I saw this butterfly on Pine Mountain Rd Fairfax, CA 94930. It would make sense that it is a Field crescent, but I'm having trouble separating it from the California crescent, which shouldn't be in this area. It was on these buttercup flowers growing on serpentine rock on a sunny morning.

Coordinator notes: Sorry to disappoint you, you have a nominate Field Crescent. There are subtle differences in pattern, coloration and P. orseis has orange antennae. This coordinator finds California Crescents east of Tioga Pass in late June and July...subspecies herlani-Ken Davenport
