Polyphemus moth
Antheraea polyphemus

Observation date: March 21, 2013
Submitted by: SFolk
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I was working at my computer and heard my cat and dog trying to catch a flying creature. Not sure if it were a bat or a bird, I saw it land in a dark corner behind a chair. With a flashlight, I saw that it was a moth (to my enormous relief!) and gently coaxed it into a large-mouth plastic container and then into a large-mouth glass vase. I have no idea how this beautiful moth entered my condo: down the chimney or through one of the doors. While I would like to share this picture via your image gallery and have downloaded the Picasa software, the hour is late. If you confirm that it is a Polyphemus, I will check into the watermark application and repost.
