Giant Swallowtail
Papilio cresphontes

Observation date: December 20, 2012
Date notes: first noticed early November, 2012
Submitted by: Jan Shaughnessy
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This has been attached to our stucco wall since I arrived in Oro Valley, AZ in early November 2012.No direct sun hits this location, about 3 feet off the ground. A lip on the stucco wall somewhat protects from the infrequent rain. Orientation as shown in photo. A zoom to the image discloses the fine web at the lower end and a web "rope" around the midsection.

Coordinator notes: This is a Papilio cresphontes chrysalis, a species which is found in southern AZ. If there is a citrus tree nearby, this was most likely the food plant of the caterpillar. They often wander off the food plant to pupate. Here is a web site with photos of the entire life cycle.
