Pink-spotted hawkmoth
Agrius cingulata

Observation date: October 22, 2012
Submitted by: rsilversea
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: It was on a moonflower vine that I was getting ready to pull up and compost. The vine had been killed by frost. It was near the bottom of the trellis.
Status: Stray

Coordinator notes: Nice find. This species is only found as a stray adult in New England (i.e. a recent BAMONA sighting from RI). But this is a very northerly record for a larval sighting. Another recent BAMONA larval record was from NJ. It is probable that a gravid female strayed into Mass. and deposited ova on your moonflower vine. It is unlikely that this individual will survive due to its host being finished for the season. Still, this is an interesting record.
