Scarlet-Bodied Wasp Moth
Cosmosoma myrodora

Observation date: September 19, 2012
Submitted by: diasn
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This moth was first observed at 5:30pm EST. It spent the next 10 minutes nectaring at African Blue Basil flowers. Conditions were cloudy, temperature was in the low 80s (Fahrenheit). The site is a known 'migrant trap' at the edge of the mainland for northward-dispersing butterflies and moths - Black Witch Moth has also been documented there. It consists of improved suburban habitat with a wide variety of native plants, with many nectar sources. After it nectared for 10+ minutes, the moth flew to the underside of a Turk's-cap Hibiscus (Malvaviscus arboreus) where it remained until the observer departed.
