Observation notes: I found this caterpillar on the road of Geode State Park in Iowa. It was not near any plants. However, I found identical caterpillars on September 16, 2012 approximately 20 miles away. These caterpillars were all on a plant that had many skinny leaves with a lot of buds. I have no idea what type of plant it was, but I collected a lot of samples.
