Polydamas Swallowtail
Battus polydamas

Observation date: June 01, 2012
Date notes: June and July of 2012
Submitted by: geneva
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The host plant for the caterpillar was a Dutchman's Pipe vine. A female was observed laying the eggs on the plant and the caterpillars were observed through the entire process. The caterpillar in the photo is searching for a place to transform into it's chrysalis stage. The next photo is a just emerged butterfly * note the chrysalis beside it. The Pipe vine plant was almost completely consumed by the caterpillars, it has since regrown(about 3 weeks) and now there are new young and very small caterpillars for a second generation.
