Polydamas Swallowtail
Battus polydamas

Observation date: July 19, 2012
Submitted by: jkbckayaker
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I watched Polydamas swallowtail lay eggs on my Dutchman's pipe vine in my butterfly garden. I went to get my camera but the butterfly was gone. Sunny day. Nearby plants include passionflower vine, pentas, cosmos, ruellia, asclepias, cassia, adonidia palm. The Dutchman's pipevine has been in the garden for a month but was not seeing any butterfly activity. I noticed several leaves looked 'rusty' so I removed them and some new growth was at the top of the plant with fresh, clean green leaves. I have the vine trained on a tomato cage about two feet high. The Polydamas laid her eggs on the fresh, green new growth at the top of the vine.
