Achemon sphinx
Eumorpha achemon

Observation date: July 11, 2012
Submitted by: grainwater
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: We found this beautiful (but aggressive) caterpillar on our grapevine. Actually, we have been wondering what has been eating our leaves and vines for about a month but haven't seen anything. On July 11th, 2012 we found this caterpillar and two very similar ones but instead of green they were brownish/orange (I will upload those separately). It was surprising to us since they are so large...how could we not have seen them until now? Anyway, the weather has been extremely dry (low humidity and no precipitation in weeks) and hot (in 100's this whole week). As we are very interested in all the beautiful critters in the world, we have no experience with caterpillars and would love to know what species these are.
