Observation notes: I was at the Lava Beds National Monument on June 16, 2012. My husband and son went into a cave and I stayed out, intending to take photos of surrounding foliage. This butterfly flew by me. There were tons in the area but it kept flickering near me so I put my hand out and it landed right on my hand. It stayed there for about 10 minutes licking the salt from my skin and didnt fly off even as my husband and son rejoined me. It was a great experience.
