Observation notes: These are very common butterflies at the Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve. There were a lot of them flitting about the day I took this picture. They are very active, but this one sat still for me and let me get close. I've seen these butterflies here last spring as well.

Coordinator notes: The basic black coloration is diagnostic of Coastal nominate Chalcedon Checkerspot. Edith's Checkerspots tend to ne much more orange and with more rounded less elongated wing shapes.
