Stella Orangetip
Anthocharis stella

Observation date: April 27, 2012
Submitted by: jeremy_b578
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I sighted this specimen in the Spokane Valley, in Washington state. These are native to the Puget Sound area, and are supposedly rare, so I was surprised to find one one east of the Cascade Mountains. The weather was partly cloudy, with scattered showers that day. The butterfly was among the Knapweed and Arrow-leaved balsamroot, at about 1800 ft altitude.

Coordinator notes: This is a female orangetip (taxonomy debated right now). Large Marbles are actually common east of the Cascades. You are probably thinking of the Island Marble, subspecies of the Large Marble.
Checklist region(s): United States, Washington, Spokane County
