Compton Tortoiseshell
Nymphalis vaualbum

Observation date: April 08, 2012
Submitted by: insanelogic
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: the underside of the wings is grey and brown like tree bark. it sat on the window screen for over 20 minutes right near the sun line on the window. it was a bright warm morning, near 10 degrees celcius. the butterfly was about 2 1/2 - 3 inches wide at the tips of the top wings. quite large actually. i have been having trouble identifying it, the wings are smoother than most of the similar species i have seen, the wings are rounded more on the edges and not nearly as ragged. i hope you can help!
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Increasingly thought to be a separate species from the Eurasian l-album. The name vaualbum is a nomen nudum; ie not a valid name under the international name rules. We have the species j-album in North America
