Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: March 27, 2012
Submitted by: padadida
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Rain just stopped yesterday. This guy was active. There was no host plant as it was on my deck
Status: Resident
Verified by: stomlins701
Verified date: November 16, 2013
Coordinator notes: Coordinator 1: I suspect this may be a Mourning Cloak butterfly caterpillar but can't tell for sure because of limiting angle and view, lighting and lack of host information. Coordinator 2: The 1st coordinator is correct--it is a Mourning Cloak, Nyphalis antiopa. The dark reddish markings on the legs, shape of the caterpillar and spines are characteristic of this species.
