West Coast Lady
Vanessa annabella

Observation date: February 21, 2012
Submitted by: Alison Davies
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: In my experience, West Coast Ladies have been quite skittish and hard to approach, but this little butterfly was so focused on its nectaring that it didn't seem to be frightened by me. (Flower: African Daisy. Weather: Sunny, clear, breezy, about 70 degrees.)

Coordinator notes: No need to put weather comments in your submissions. They are rarely relevant in your part of the world. Now in 2003 on Cottonwood Pass, Colorado, I caught White-Veined Arctic Butterflies in a snow storm...now that was newsworthy. I've also gotten Indra Swallowtails in 30 mph or more winds and collected butterflies in Oklahoma and Arkansas in the rain. Good luck on doing that here.
