Elegant sphinx
Sphinx perelegans

Observation date: August 03, 2011
Date notes: Photo about 30 minutes after sunset.
Submitted by: kpaschal
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This moth (I think) is huge. It is aproximately 3 inches in length with a 4 inch wingspan. I mistook it for a hummingbird in the low light initially. It was really eating the nectar of the petunias (which was why I thought it may have been some sort of butterfly... I don't know much about insects here).
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: It is a good thing you included the size, as there are at least six sphingx moths that have similar body markings. Only perelegens is that large, however, in your area.
