Mourning Cloak
Nymphalis antiopa

Observation date: March 13, 2017
Submitted by: RichHubie
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: BAD PICTURE. Warm sunny day. Mourning Cloaks have been reported in a 2005 report on the Big River Project but I've never seen them since I've been surveying.. Today I disturbed three along the Haul Road. None gave me a great chance at a picture. I realized that they could only be Mourning Cloaks from my experience with them in Southern California. This is a ragged individual with the "yellow" border now faded to white with the blue dots. All three of these butterflies were apparently sunning themselves on the Haul Road.
