Southwestern Orangetip
Anthocharis thoosa

Observation date: May 28, 2015
Submitted by: JoseBonner
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: A wonderfully sunny day, typical of this time of year in Santa Fe. There were many of these orangetips patrolling the canyon, particularly near the spring. None, however, alighted. I did my best to capture one in-flight, perhaps my first attempt to do so with my current lens. This photo is not great, but clearly shows the orange tips, and perhaps enough of the black border between orange and white that, coupled with its location, may provide an ID

Coordinator notes: taxonomy is a little confused in this group and different field guides call this by different names depending on publication date. Regardless, we have only one orangetip that flies in NC NM as far as I have been able to ascertain. I am calling it Southwestern Orangetip (for now). Very hard to photograph - they rarely settle.
