Mournful Duskywing
Erynnis tristis

Observation date: July 30, 2016
Submitted by: A.Y.Liang
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Fifth instar larva of Erynnis tristis (mournful duskywing), reared from egg on Quercus (oak). The egg was collected along with a few others on growing shoots of the host on 7/30/16. The larvae strictly preferred feeding on growing shoots in all instars but were moderately tolerant of older leaves by the final instar, growing very slowly but steadily. They constructed shelters by folding one or two leaves using a few thick strands of silk. The identification is positive as this individual was reared to adult.
