Observation notes: Fourth instar larva of Battus philenor hirsuta (California pipevine swallowtail) on Aristolochia californica (California pipevine). The vines were inhabited by several dozens, perhaps even a hundred gregariously and solitarily feeding larvae of all stages. In addition, there were large egg clutches on several growing shoots, and a few parasitized pupae on a fence.
