Chalcedon Checkerspot
Euphydryas chalcedona

Observation date: March 17, 2016
Submitted by: JoseBonner
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: A clear sunny day about 75. This checkerspot was uninterested in the numerous flowers in the vicinity. The first photo shows it in the third location to which it flew as I stalked it. I was able to creep up behind a larger bush without alarming it. The second photo shows it in the 7th or 8th location, tucked into the shade of an erosion gully. To my eye, it was nearly invisible, with sunlit white sand against seemingly-black shade. I imagine that it considered itself to be well hidden. Adjusting the exposure and contrast, I was able to reveal that the Lep really is hidden there.
