Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I have not seen this type of butterfly in the SouthEast Texas region to my knowledge. It has been unseasonably warm this year with El Nino. We have had lots of monarchs around, but not this kind, to my knowledge. It was dead when I found it, ting exactly as you see in the pictures, but hadn't been there more than 12 hours because the sprinkler system would have washed it away had it been there when they kicked on earlier in the morning. Not sure what caused it to perish - there's no obvious trauma to the body or wings. It was lying in the middle of the concrete walkway, as if it had fallen out of the sky.
