Large Maple Spanworm Moth
Prochoerodes lineola

Observation date: September 02, 2016
Submitted by: Sara Combs
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The two pictures are the same moth. When I first saw the moth, I thought it was a leaf stuck to an outbuilding. We have a security light on this building and moths frequently hang out here. So, I thought...maybe it's a moth and not a leaf. When I looked closely I saw the antenna underneath the wings. A few minutes after I took the first photo, she flew to the door of the building. In the second picture her head is clearly visible. She has the ability to cloak herself by folding her wings completely over her head...it's as if she is double-jointed or something. This is the first time I have seen this particular moth. We live in deep woods near the Holston River in southwest Virginia.
