Aphrodite Fritillary
Speyeria aphrodite

Observation date: September 01, 2016
Submitted by: elegrand
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Noted a large fritillary in my yard, which initially I thought was a male Diana due to the contrast between brown and orange on the upper wings. When it landed on a bush I could see large white spots below suggestive of Great Spangled. However, the markings seemed especially contrasty (or fresh). With binoculars and viewing the underside as it perched, I noticed the very narrow buff zone on the undersurface of the hindwing between the outer rows of white spots. I only had access to an iPhone for photos. If confirmed, this would be my first confirmed Aphrodite Fritillary, though I have seen a few others in previous years that I couldn't confirm.
