Bedstraw hawkmoth
Hyles gallii

Observation date: August 14, 2016
Submitted by: fortsmith
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Caterpillar was crossing a dirt and gravel road. Day was hot and sunny. General vegetation in area is sandy open woodlands with aspen and jackpine forests. High bank overlooking the Slave River. Caterpillar was near edge of road side which is overgrown with clover, grasses, rose bushes, wolf willow, etc. Caterpillar appeared to be in good health, not stressed. Your website included a sighting in Hay River in July 2016. Hay River is a 2.5 hour drive from Fort Smith. Caterpillar was found by my son, William while we out riding our bicycles. This appears to be the third sighting of this species in the southern half of the Northwest Territories, expanding its northern range.
