Cecropia silkmoth
Hyalophora cecropia

Observation date: August 09, 2016
Submitted by: CherylDiGiacomo
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Measured with ruler at 4 1/2 inches on sumac tree in yard at eye level Stayed for three days. It migrated to underside of branch and bunched up. It may be building a cocoon but it has been raining for two days and I haven't been able to spot it again. It ate the leaves very quickly and I have a video of it. It has black spike like jaws that appeared to open sideways while chewing. (Looked like the monster from alien when it opened its jaws)
