Observation notes: On this warm summer day, early evening, this fellow came to visit our Phlox. I was working nearby in the lawn when I heard a flutter. The wings aren't as loud as a hummingbird's but the appearance was surprising. It looks like a small furry lobster or crawfish actually with hummingbird wings. This moth was about 3 inches long and its proboscis was probably just as long but curled up when not near a flower. He spent about 4 minutes nimbly visiting the flowers and was not concerned with me getting so close to take many pictures. After being bothered by a few nearby bees and gathering its fill, he moved on. The flight lines were definitely not as crisp as a hummingbird but he was still a fast mover!
