Coordinator notes: Although the species E. chalcedona and E. anicia have been previously combined into one species (that being chalcedona), the two are yet presently considered to be different species. The one you have photographed here is the high altitude subspecies brucei. Other species/subspecies controversies exists in the treatment of bernadetta (of anicia) as a separate species or one in the same with anicia and as well the separation of E. colon from chalcedona. All of these basically include what are commonly referred to as "The Variable Checkerspot" in various parts of the western U.S. Mike
