Common Buckeye
Junonia coenia

Observation date: June 28, 2016
Submitted by: Joseph Miller
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Found in blooming alfalfa fiel. Immediately stood out form surrounding Common Buckeyes as being much darker and nearly lacking the pale forewing band. While Tropical Buckeye would be unexpected here, I believe the combination of the dark band and the lack of white on the basal side of the forewing eyespot indicate this species. It has been suggested to me that this could be an individual of the rubrosuffusa of coenia, but I was unable to find any information on this form other than an old photo of the type specimen, link here, http://www.butterfliesofamerica.com/L/ih/junonia0007_i.htm. Due to the lack of other resources on that form, as well as it not being a perfect match, I decided to submit it here for further review. Coordinator notes: I reviewed the other photos of this sighting on Flicker. The undersides look like Common Buckeye, so that is what I believe this is. Here is a link to a sighting from Wisconsin on bugguide.net that looks similar to your sighting. SAT http://bugguide.net/node/view/88923
