European Yellow Underwing
Noctua pronuba

Observation date: May 08, 2016
Submitted by: PianoKitten
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: While digging in the garden to weed and plant herbs, I found this wiggly pupa in the soil, no less than 6" deep. It only moves when you pick it up, and I have a cool video of its flexibility. Otherwise, when not being held, it looked dead from the outside. It was a deep reddish color, maybe brownish red.
