Great Spangled Fritillary
Speyeria cybele

Observation date: June 14, 2016
Submitted by: lilkriskattn
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: There have been several Great Spangled Fritallaries on my butterfly bush almost all the time. I have noticed that some specimens are much bigger than others and I was wondering if the size difference depended on gender?
Status: Resident

Coordinator notes: Females of Speyeria cybele are typically larger and darker than males. However, in east TN it's worth carefully examining darker fritillaries to find the occasional Speyeria aphrodite.
