Large Orange Sulphur
Phoebis agarithe

Observation date: June 12, 2016
Submitted by: silversea_starsong
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Two males occupying the same 100m area. I did not know this species occurred this far north and I was very surprised to see it. But given there were two in the same location that suggests to me that this was not a coincidence. In flight appeared large (for a Pierid), and the impression was of a uniformly orange-yellow butterfly. On closer examination the upperside of the forewing was subtly bicoloured, with a paler outer 1/4 and a more saturated inner 3/4. Underside plain orange-yellow with scattered, indistinct markings. The second male quickly disappeared, so I have attached 2 images of the first male.

Coordinator notes: This species has recently extended its range into southern California and breeds in Riverside County in the Palm Springs area. There are recent records for San Diego, Orange and LA Counties, too early to tell yet if transient or becoming a permanent resident-Ken Davenport
