Coordinator notes: I do not believe this is an Orange-headed Skipper, Amblyscirtes phylace. The look of that species is quite different, with a relatively bright orange head that contrasts with dark brown-black body. Additionally, the closest records of this species to the sighting area is on the east side of the mountains in NM. This sighting shows whitish on the underside of the head and body, and the head area is more of a orangy-bronze probably because of the way sunlight is hitting it. This looks like a Dun Skipper, Euphyes vestris. This photo on bugguide.net shows a specimen closely matching the subject sighting. Based on that photo and some others, I believe this is a Dun Skipper at the edge of its range. BAMONA shows three old records for the Lubbock area and a more recent record to the east in Cottle Co.
