Observation notes: this was a recently dead caterpillar that had fallen off of a large madrona tree, and the twig it is on is a madrona. We have had a few reported sightings of ceanothus moths on this island, and the caterpillar looked like something in the silkworm moth family. I tried to identify it. I realize that it might be too beat a specimen to positively identify, but just thought I would report it anyway. I have read that these moth caterpillar do feed on madronas.
