Polyphemus moth
Antheraea polyphemus

Observation date: October 12, 2015
Submitted by: Michelle Pelescak
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: The caterpillar was eating a dead leaf, very loudly. It has few hairs, in tufts, if any. Beautiful light green collar, with yellow spots. It is quite large, about 1.5". It was in my backyard, close to compost, wisteria, and ivy. There is no tree quite nearby, the nearest one is about 15-20'. I did not see any other distinguishing body features, nothing noticeable. It was a beautiful, sunny, warm day, with temperature in low 70s.
