Observation notes: This caterpillar was in distress, with a large wound on one side, under assault from yellowjackets and flies. I am guessing this is a late, if not last, instar! I was unable to find a match in a cursory glimpse through Wagner, but more astute person pointed it out to me on page 231. Mature second growth forest, American Beech, Tulip Poplar, Red Maple, unidentified Ash and Oak. My neighbor tells me there is a hickory right a the spot I found it, but I wouldn't know a hickory if it stood up on its hind legs and bit me.
