Cecropia silkmoth
Hyalophora cecropia

Observation date: July 18, 2015
Submitted by: Jo Spencer
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: This photograph was found on-line provided by Getty Images. It is the exact type of huge green caterpiller that my grandchildren and I found in my yard last week. I told them that it was so big that it must be a moth. Then, I searched for 'big green caterpiller' on the internet and found this. When it is fully extended it is about five inches long, and has orange and blue knobs on its back. We read that it prefers maple trees. We then watched as it slowly made its way across the yard and about ten feet up my maple tree. This took about an hour. We then got distracted and lost site of it.
