Observation notes: This is an exciting update from our sighting submission yesterday! After concern for our newly emerged Luna - getting him back to nature on the OTHER side of our screen, without moving him too soon and causing him to become a bird snack - we researched and found that a good strategy might be to open the screened door after dark. We learned that the Luna is nocturnal and that only after dark he might find his way out of our porch confines. In the morning, we could hardly wait to check on the moth to see if he had taken flight. We were astonished to find, not only had our moth not taken flight, our moth had brought in a friend! After further research, we learned that our moth was most certainly a female and that through nature ... and our open door ... that the mates were destined to be together. After a day of the mates hanging out on our screen, we again opened the door after dark. This morning we have found only one moth remaining. The one which we assumed to be the female has found her way out of the screened porch, and we think that we have identified about 50 eggs that she left behind. The male seems to still be enjoying the inside of the screen. We will consider ourselves lucky for however long he would like to stay!THis is been an exciting Luna moth week at our house!
