Compton Tortoiseshell
Nymphalis vaualbum

Observation date: July 09, 2015
Submitted by: lornemack
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I don't know butterflies at all, really, but my wife said "oh, look, a Monarch", and something about it didn't seem right to me. 1) there's a fork in the tail/hindwing, and 2) there's not black edge with white polka dots. I'm stumped! It was a nice warm day here in our city, and this butterfly just came and rested on our patio for a while.
