Coordinator notes: This is a female Edwards Fritillary. We do get the Great Spangled Fritillary in eastern Colorado but it is rarely seen. Being a species that occurs on the eastern prairie where dry-land violet (the host) grow (Viola nuttalli), it is not uncommon to see these in the Denver area. I use to catch these in SE Denver a long time ago. It looks like this female has an entirely black left wingtip which makes it a minor asymetric aberrant. Mike
