Common Alpine
Erebia epipsodea

Observation date: May 30, 2015
Submitted by: Vickie
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Around 80 Degrees Fahrenheit, and I don't know the host plant.
Status: Resident
Verified by: Ken Davenport
Verified date: June 06, 2015
Coordinator notes: Tough call and I can see why you would think this is Vidler's Alpine which it resembles, but that species is not recorded in Union County and Common Alpines can have extensive orange as well and superficially resemble vidleri. With a new county record we would need an underside photo as well to confirm ID, you may want to check photos of the two at the Butterflies of America website. I am personally familiar with Common Alpines personally and with vidleri through a scientist who found them last summer-Ken Davenport
