Hackberry Emperor
Asterocampa celtis

Observation date: May 11, 2015
Submitted by: pumblebumble
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I am new at this, so please forgive my ignorance. There are 3 eye spots on the FW, and I can't find any other images of similar butterflies on the web. A previous photo I took of a Hackberry Emperor was similar, but did not have those 3 eye spots. It was feeding on a climbing jasmine.

Coordinator notes: This is probably subspecies 'antonia' described on bugguide.net and Glassberg's western "Butterflies through Binoculars" as having two eyespots on the forewing, instead of the one eyepot seen over most of the range. Below is a link to a discussion about this on bugguide.net. SAT http://bugguide.net/node/view/469602
