Observation notes: Included this earlier sighting of a Variable checkerspot to show slight pattern variable with the Variable checkerspot sighted on 05/03/2015, both found in Santa Clara county. The latter lacks any red markers between the the white/cream colored bars.

Coordinator notes: Most scientists recognize two or more species within the common name "Variable Checkerspot". This is the nominate Chalcedon Checkerspot, not an Anicia or Colon Checkerspot.-Ken Davenport
