Observation notes: Sunny day with an easterly breeze. Habitat is foohill toe-slope grassland adjacent to suburbia. This Monarch was flying low over the ground "tasting" various plants like pasque flower and Nuttall's Violets. It was headed north. I chased it around trying to get photos with my phone with limited success. A large butterfly, 2.5-3 inches across, with dull orange wings with black veins. No horizontal black bar going across the hind wing like on a Viceroy. The tips of the fore wings were black with small pale spots. Not much else to confuse this familiar species with. I was surprised by the early date, although I think it's within some normal pattern of occurrence in the region.
