Milbert's Tortoiseshell
Aglais milberti

Observation date: October 15, 2014
Submitted by: rosacmchenry@sb...
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: I found this butterfly in a large Lantana shrub. My conclusion is that is arrived on a major cold front that came in a couple days earlier. There was a lot of high wind and moisture with the front. I believe it must have taken shelter in the shrub and later passed away as the temps dropped, in the exact spot it had landed. When i first spotted it, i thought it was alive. This submission is my second, as it has been determined that it was 'lost' during the cyber-security system issue. It was not put on the map or into my account. Although it was a verified sighting. The specimen now resides in the collection of James Adams. Thank you for your attention.

Coordinator notes: This looks like the 3rd Kansas sighting for this species in the BAMONA database, the other two were in northwestern Kansas many years ago. Great find! SAT
