Great Purple Hairstreak
Atlides halesus

Observation date: December 21, 2014
Submitted by: Robert Gorman
Specimen type: Photograph
Observation notes: Ken, Diane, and i started seeing these fly around 1200. air temp about 65 as per car air temp gauge. This individual was 3-4 feet off the ground, sipping nectar of mistletoe. Well i guess that explains a lot, rarely spotted at ground level by most people. Alway's wondered if they got nectar from mistletoe. This area has lots of mesquite trees, some quite short, most very low to ground and all have mistletoe in them! Cloud cover all day, around 2,000 ft, moisture in ground from recent light rain in this area. desert to desert transition to laguna mountain range. Very few shrubs blooming at this time or flowers. also saw leda hairstreak, painted ladies, dusky wing, ceraunus blue. cool light breeze and cloud cover all day!
