Observation notes: On occasional walks in the botanic garden over the last two weeks, I have been overflown by California Sister butterflies several times. This individual was one of a pair that flew overhead this afternoon, in a cluster of trees about 50 yards north of the main building. The other flew off into other trees. This individual alit on a leaf of an oak tree that was about 20 feet above me and to my left. I was able to spot it with my zoom lens camera. The afternoon temperature was about 82 Fahrenheit, humidity was over 40%. Breezes were intermittent, calm to 6-8 mph. This was the sole sighting of a California Sister this afternoon. A few times, monarchs, pipevine swallowtails and duskywings flitted into and out of sight, mostly in the cultivar sector of the garden.
